Health classes explained

The four main classifications—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—explained and what determines which you fall into.

Underwriting rate classes determine your premium. Terminology differs slightly between carriers, but the structure stays consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, and table ratings for additional risk. Tobacco applicants occupy a separate tier with elevated pricing.

What underwriters look at

Carriers examine BMI, blood pressure and lipids, family disease history (heart or cancer before age 60), traffic record, medication history, job and pastimes, and nicotine/tobacco consumption. Top-tier classes demand excellent marks in virtually all areas; Preferred classes tolerate minor imperfections; Standard grades accommodate managed ailments like regulated hypertension.

How to use the quote tool

The health inquiry asks for honest self-assessment: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your estimates show that class; the carrier's underwriting determines your actual class. Uncertain about yourself? Get quotes at two levels and compare, then let your application settle it. Inflating your health assessment doesn't reduce your ultimate rate—it just throws off the estimate.

Susman Insurance Agency specializes in matching you with carriers whose underwriting philosophies favor your particular situation—frequently more impactful than comparing headline rates.
